JEMS ADULT Sewing MACHINE CLASSES
for Beginners

Tuition: $245 / 4 classes

In this class you will learn the ins and outs of your home sewing machine along with an introduction to patternmaking. We’ll teach you a variety of techniques to mend garments, make pillows and create other small projects.

JEMS Natural Dyeing Workshop!!!
Check out the slideshow from our last natural dyeing class ... it was a blast!!!



In collaboration with the Berlin Collective, JEM is offering a full day workshop on Sunday May 6th from 1pm to 4pm. In this workshop we'll be dyeing fabrics using natural roots such as madder and indigo. We'll be exploring different techniques, such as indigo dyeing, the Japanese dyeing method known as Shibori and experimenting with resists techniques. In this class we'll be dyeing handmade cotton scarves, tote bags and tees for the spring. All materials, snacks and beverages are included.

JEM's Valentine's Day Workshop


In collaboration with Berlin Collective, JEM will be offering a one-day Valentine’s Day Workshop where we'll be dyeing fabrics using natural ingredients, such as; cherries, roses, beets, and more to create red, rose colored cotton scarves, through various dyeing techniques and exploring the use of resists. Explore the idea of using words and shapes while playing with dye.

When: February 12 from 2-5pm

Why: to explore, inspire, create and learn with artists in a super amazing treasure in NYC.

Price: $60. This price includes materials, beverages, artists, and a super fun time

Beginning in January 2012, JEM will be offering a variety of crafting, sewing and art classes throughout the year! Check out our FIRST-SEMESTER (ever)'s SCHEDULE, below!

Sewing for Beginners

Tuition: $240 / 4 classes

Upcoming class sessions:

Wednesdays, January 11th – February 1st

This class will teach you the ins and outs of your home sewing machine. Starting with basic hand stitches, we’ll teach you a variety of techniques to mend garments, make pillows and create other small projects.

Class size is limited to 6.




Patternmaking Basics

Tuition: $120 / 2 classes

Upcoming class sessions:

Fridays, January 20th and 27th

5–7pm


So you know how to sew but have never used a pattern? This class will not only teach you to read commercial patterns, but to create your own based on the fit you love! Learn basic pattern drafting, dart manipulation, and more.

Class size is limited to 8.

Note: this is not a sewing-intensive course, but you can try out sewing with your patterns at our Sewing Drop-in Class.



Fashion Illustration

Tuition: $240 / 4 classes

Learn to sketch like a pro in this introductory course in Fashion Illustration. We’ll teach you the basic conventions illustrators use to render garments, and help you explore your personal drawing style. This class is perfect for beginning your portfoli

o or creating new work for one you’ve started.

Class size is limited to 10.



Sewing Drop-in Classes

Stop by Jem on Thursday evenings for a brush-up sewing lesson. Have something that needs mending or a shirt that doesn’t fit? Need help figuring out the pattern for a dress? Our sewing teachers will guide you with step-by-step instruction on how to begin a project or finish one in progress.



Easy Crochet Hats!

Tuition: $120 / 2 classes

Fridays, January 6th and 13th

5:30–7pm


In this class you’ll learn a few basic but versatile crochet stitches to create stylish hats to keep you warm all winter! Though the holidays are ended, these might make great belated gifts for that special someone.



Bargello Embroidery

Tuition: $120 / 2 classes

Upcoming Sessions:

Wednesdays, February 8th and 15th

5–7pm


Try your hand at stitching with this centuries-old technique! Bargello uses long stitches in stepped patterns to create intricate zigzag and curved designs. You’ll learn to make a small sampler that can be turned into a pin cushion or mounted to hang.



One-Day Workshop Courses

Sweater Darning

Tuition: $50 / 2–hour session

With just a few simple stitch techniques, you can learn to lovingly mend (and decorate) your old holey sweaters to give them new life. Warning: darning is addicting!



Natural Dyeing

Tuition: $65 / 3–hour session

Learn a variety of natural dyes and tying techniques to create beautiful textiles in this one-day workshop. Our dyeing experts will explain the chemistry and process to create your own dye baths at home.

Fashion Re/Action: Symposium: Building Sustainable Fashion


THE FINAL EVENT of this year's FASHION RE/ACTION!! Rachel Shragis leads a quilting bee for the 21st century in this unique interdisciplinary event. While our guest speakers explore the question "How can we as consumers create a Sustainable Fashion System?", we'll be working together to create a quilted flowchart of the issues at hand.

Speakers include: Carolyn Priebe, founder and head designer for Uluru, a sustainable clothing line based in New York City; Pascale Gatzen, an artist, designer and professor of fashion design in Parsons' Integrated Design Program; Glenn Marla, performance artist and employee of Re/Dress Brooklyn; and Otto von Busch (aka Wronsov), founder of the brand and research project >Self_Passage<, an open-source project investigating empowerment through fashion hacktivism.

The event is FREE and open to the public. The talks begin promptly at 1pm with Q&A time after each speaker. Feel free to stay for the entire event or drop in for only part of it. Refreshments will be served.

Fashion Re/Action: Clothing Remake Marathon! 10/15

This Saturday is our last hands-on workshop event, and the second-to-last of this year's Fashion Re/Action! A total free-for-all of re-making and upcycling clothes, come to our Remake Marathon and use our donated fabric, clothing, and notions to turn discarded garments into the stuff of dreams! Our sewing and design experts Jeremy Wilson and Michael DiPietro will be on hand to help guide you with design ideas and technical help. This is a free-form studio workshop with a lot of hands-on sewing time... and probably the craftstravaganza you've been waiting for.

The event is FREE and open to the public. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring in projects you've begun or odd bits and pieces to incorporate into your creations. If you have clothes to donate, we'll gladly accept them. The demonstration starts promptly at 1pm (don't miss it) with open studio time afterwards.
